The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research–Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (CSIR-STEPRI) has launched an innovative project on Solar Radiation Modification (SRM), aimed at addressing climate change impacts in Ghana. The event, held on November 27, 2024, at CSIR-STEPRI in Accra, was under the project entitled: “Assessment of Knowledge and Governance towards SRM in Ghana: Implications for More Efficient Ethical, Policy, and Social Practices” (AsKGovSRM-Ghana).

SRM technologies, including Stratospheric Aerosol Injection and Cloud Albedo Enhancement, present potential pathways to temporarily mitigate global warming impacts by managing solar radiation. However, ethical, policy, and social challenges underscore the need for a robust governance framework, especially in Ghana, where climate change disproportionately affects livelihoods.

The AsKGovSRM-Ghana project, led by CSIR-STEPRI in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast and the University of Health and Allied Sciences, seeks to generate evidence-based knowledge and establish governance systems that integrate ethical and social considerations.

Workshop Highlights

The workshop brought together stakeholders from government, academia, research institutions, civil society, the private sector, and media to map out a vision for SRM governance in Ghana. Key activities included:

  • Presentations on the science of SRM and its socio-political implications.
  • Collaborative stakeholder mapping to assess governance structures and stakeholder roles in the SRM space.
  • Participatory discussions exploring pathways to integrate diverse perspectives into SRM governance.

Outcomes

- Awareness and Collaboration: Enhanced stakeholder awareness of the AsKGovSRM project and strengthened partnerships.

- Insights on SRM Governance: Valuable understanding of the ethical, social, and political dimensions of SRM.

- Stakeholder Network: A mapped social network of stakeholders committed to advancing SRM governance in Ghana, complete with defined roles and responsibilities.

This workshop marks a critical step in Ghana’s efforts to balance climate innovation with ethical and sustainable governance practices.
