The project is being implemented to directly link the activities of the FNSSA to the activities of Pan-African Network for Economic Analysis of Policies (PPANAP aimed at supporting the Food and Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA) 10-year roadmap and the global transition towards sustainable food systems.

Specific Objective

The project aims at:

  1. Improving capacities of research, academic, public sector, private sector, and civil society stakeholders and institutions involved in evidence-based policy analysis.
  2. Enhancing science-policy interface that supports science-based decision-making processes and experiences in support of agro-policy
  3. Improving strategies that promote scientific support within policy development in Africa and in Europe using digital technologies and information systems to accelerate the translation of research results into policies
  4. Expanding and strengthening the PANAP Network to support African countries with research on economic analysis of policies focusing on Food Systems towards their sustainable transition.
To achieve these objectives, the project has 8 work packages including:
  • WP1: Evidence to support the development of consortium activities. 
  • WP2: Capacity Building for Researchers & Policy Makers on Economic Policy Research and Analysis 
  • WP3: Development of information, innovation and knowledge collection and management systems 
  • WP4: PANAP-FNSSA Partnership Data Collection and Knowledge Management 
  • WP5: Bridging the gap between, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners - Design and implementation of activities and support. 
  • WP6: Working together between, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners – Expand implemented platforms and deepen engagement. 
  • WP7: PANAP Network Expansion 
  • WP8: Participatory Project Coordination and Management 

CSIR-STEPRI is participating in all the work packages but is heavily involved in WP1, leading the task of Mapping existing policies, projects, and stakeholder of the PANAP network.

Methodology

The project adopts a multidisciplinary research method including Capacity building/development (CB), stakeholder engagement (SE), and participatory monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) to achieve its objectives. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches are adopted in the various approaches indicated. For the Task 1.2 being led by CSIR-STEPRI, we are using mainly surveys, key informant interviews and stakeholder engagement to map the existing policies, projects, and stakeholder of the PANAP network.

Activities Undertaken in this Quarter

Participation in Work Package 5 included:
  • Development of Workshop Concept Note and Methodology for Capacity Building and Policy-Research Interface iworkshops in Uganda and Kenya 
  • Discussions on Capacity Building in Ghana and discussions for PPI/PEA for better research-policy interface training in Accra, Ghana hosted by STEPRI (WP2)
Participation in WP8 activities (PANAP) Calls for Workshops, Webinars and Calls included:
  •  Virtual Knowledge Event
  •  Consortium discussion on the STEPPFOS Projects and PANAP Management under WP7 and WP8.
Way Forward
  • Participation in technical discussions for the development of concept notes and workshop methodologies for upcoming collaborative workshops
  • Serve as consortium partners in review of PANAP calls 
  • Participate in Capacity Building and Policy-Research Interface iworkshops in Uganda and Kenya (possibly).
