Specific Objective

The overall objective is to facilitate a workshop that helps build a strong community of practice amongst IDRC-supported projects examining gender inequities in Southern science systems.

The specific objectives of the Project are as follows:
  • To have project teams systematically share evidence from their studies with one another and look for connections between their work;
  • To support project teams to synthesize findings across their respective projects to determine research gaps that still need to be filled;
  • To support project teams in solidifying systematic monitoring, learning and evaluation plans for the remainder of their research projects; and
  • To help project teams build strategic knowledge-sharing/translation plans for their projects and the larger cohort of projects.

Approach

As the organiser of the workshop, the main activities started with the development of a concept note and project budget that were approved by IDRC and the grant agreement signed by Prof Paul Bosu, Director-General of CSIR on behalf of CSIR-STEPRI. Other activities were purchasing air tickets for participants, securing the venue for the conference and accommodation for participants coming from, sending out invitation letters, facilitating visa acquisition for participants, ensuring the safe airport transfers for participants and providing all the logistical, technical and secretarial support for a successful workshop. The workshop was held from June 6 to 9, 2023 at the Peduase Valley Resort at Peduase near Accra. Participants included researchers in the field of gender in STEM from various countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Major Outcomes

The workshop was successfully held with Prof Paul Bosu, Director-General of CSIR delivering the welcome address on the first day of the conference. All the research teams shared their project results including CSIR-STEPRI, which researched to assess the barriers to women’s participation in engineering education and careers. On the second day, seasoned facilitators guided the participants on the development of theories of change for each project followed by a presentation of an overview of gender at work and the gender support project with IDRC. There were plenary presentations of groups exercises on the theories of change. The third day focused on the development of knowledge translation plans for each of the projects. On the fourth day, the participants participated in the Gender Summit Africa held on 9th June 2023 at
the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra. The technical workshop report has been submitted to IDRC and has been accepted and published. The financial report has also been submitted and it has been approved.
